Web Design Checkmate: Using Chess For Success in Web Design

The business of building websites is one of constant change, adaptation and strategy. The way designers and developers build websites is often informed by the methods of others and their own trial and error. In light of this, we can draw a number of parallels ? some philosophical, to a certain extent ? between Web professionals and one of the oldest and most popular board games of all time (counting traditional and digital games). This game is chess.

Screenshot

In this article, we?ll explore the relationship between the game of chess and the Web industry. We?ll learn fundamental lessons from the pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen and king, and we?ll highlight the factors ? both offline and online ? that determine best practices. The game is beloved by many professionals, so it seems fitting to apply its great strategy and elegance to the digital age; certain practices might help you lead a more successful working life.

CAP Code Remit Extended Online

As mentioned previously, the Advertising Standards Authority is to extend its digit remit for consumer protection.

Advertisements and other marketing communications by or from companies, organisations or sole traders on their own websites, or in other non-paid-for space online under their control, that are directly connected with the supply or transfer of goods, services, opportunities and gifts, or which consist of direct solicitations of donations as part of their own fund-raising activities.

The announcement on Wednesday describes how the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) made the decision and published a guide to the new remit, exclusions and sanctions. The regulation covers advertisers' own marketing communications on their own websites and in other non-paid-for space online under their control (e.g. social networking sites).

Note that some user-generated content could fall under regulation—see section 3.9 for a description. Communications that do not constitute an advertisement or other marketing communication are excluded from the remit, as are marketing communications that promote causes or ideas, and anything already in list of content already excluded by the CAP Code (e.g. press releases, editorial content, corporate reports, natural listings on a search engine or a price comparison site).

CAP recommend all web site owners and agencies sign up to their free CAP Services to learn more about the code, its implications, ensure their web sites comply with the CAP code, and most importantly access to the free Copy Advice service. The remit will come into force on 1 March 2011.

New UK Advertising Codes were also published on Wednesday, and came into effect the same day.

Web and the Election

The web played a major role in Australia's recent federal election, and not just because of the National Broadband Network. The web, and especially social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, were not just a source of election news and information during the campaign. This election was fought online and in social media on a level not previously seen in Australian politics.

Social media - enter at your own risk

Thinking back to the prior federal election, most of us had probably never even heard of Twitter. During this election campaign, it has proved its capacity to not only create buzz and provide a discussion forum, but also to make or break candidates. Remember 'wendy4senate'? She's a prime example of why social media should be entered into only with proper planning, and with a degree of caution. Queensland based Family First senate hopeful Wendy Francis created a storm of controversy in the lead up to the election with a carelessly worded tweet, which she later attributed to a campaign staffer misinterpreting her comments. Misunderstood or not, Wendy's election hopes were derailed by this controversy, and the reputation of her party may have been badly damaged into the bargain. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter can be a great asset in the political arena when used well; Barack Obama's presidential campaign is a good example. If they are not properly controlled and understood, however, there is also the potential for disaster.

Another way to advertise

The increasing barrage of political advertising is a commonly lamented aspect of an election campaign. If it's not an avalanche of flyers in the mail, it's the TV commercials on every channel. Nowadays, the internet is just as susceptible to the flood of election advertising as traditional media. Platforms such as YouTube offer political parties a very effective avenue for political advertising. The parties can get a greater variety of advertising out into the public domain at a low cost, and they can also take their advertising in directions that would perhaps be considered too unconventional for traditional media. In this most recent campaign, there were a number of advertisements produced specifically for distribution via YouTube, which is indicative of this changing approach to advertising and social media.

News and analysis

Over the past couple of decades, the web has changed the way many of us get our news and information. During this election campaign, the sheer volume of political news and analysis available online was very reflective of this trend. Specially designed tools such as ABC's Campaign Pulse site and News Ltd's "Watch Your Vote" widget showed a movement towards interactive, graphically presented election information. The ABC's election coverage included a rolling journal of frequently updated political news snippets, providing users with an up-to-the-minute overview of election happenings. Google and NineMSN also launched election mini sites. NineMSN's site featured news articles, polling updates and interactive content such as the 'Tweet Race' - an opportunity to decide which party makes the best use of Twitter, by voting for one pollie's tweet over another. Google's site was geared towards assisting voters by providing information such as search trends, links to the major parties' YouTube channels and AEC resources. Google also pioneered a new 'Student Voice' initiative to educate school students about the voting process, with the opportunity to vote in a mock youth federal election.

So does the web and social media add anything valuable to the way an election is played out, or is it merely an unwelcome distraction from the real issues? It probably depends a lot on your own perspective. On one hand, it gives politicians another avenue to make their messages heard, but it can also make campaigns a lot harder to control. One thing is likely though - irrespective of its benefits and pitfalls, the web's role in politics will grow bigger rather than smaller.

Apple's trouble with TV

Apple TV has been a persistent loser from a company that usually only tolerates winners. It's clear that Apple wants to do something "in the living room," but damned if it can figure out exactly what that is. Yesterday, Apple took another run at this thing, announcing an "all-new" Apple TV. As with any new electronic gadget, I must be of two minds about the new Apple TV. The first, most difficult question is, will the new Apple TV be a successful product for Apple? The second question is easier: is this a product I want to buy for myself? Freebies: "Ancient stones" High resolution textures

Last week, I came back from a short vacation to Italy. I had a great time, visited Rome too (including all the tourist attractions you need to see over there), but also visited the ruins of Ostia Antica. It's pretty impressive to see what the Roman people were capable to build, such a long time ago (it's not as impressive as the the Colosseum, but still).

While my girl and I were walking - in the burning sun - through Ostia Antica, she came up with the great idea to take pictures of the impressive ruins to be used as textures for designers. She's the one that took these 14 pictures of ancient stones, ready to be used in your next design work.

Ancient Stones Texture Pack

I hope you enjoy them and use them well. The textures are totally free for all kinds of use. All pictures are 1500px in width.

Download the Ancient stones Texture Pack

Don't forget to check out some other great high quality textures that are released on this website before. I want to thank my girlfriend for the idea and taking these useful texture pictures.

Print: An Interview I Conducted with Mark Porter

I came across this interview I conducted in 2008 with former Guardian design director Mark Porter and realized that I had never linked to it here. It ran in the December 2008 issue of Print Magazine (where I now write a monthly column) but that site is notoriously difficult to navigate. The interview is a bit of a relic of history now, as neither Mark nor I are still helming the design groups at our respective news organizations, but I thought it was still interesting enough to post here. Mark recounts his experience acclimating himself to the digital environment after spending most of his career as a print designer, and has some illuminating things to say about where the two schools of thought overlap. Read the full interview here.
