Importing Your Firefox Settings Into Safari
I’m probably going backwards compared to most people, but I have been using Firefox and am tired of it crashing all the time, so I want to go back to Safari on my MacBook. Problem is, I don’t know how to copy across my bookmarks bar and it’s pretty tweaked for the way I browse. Dave’s [...]
Your Freelance Office: 6 Places to Beat the Heat
It?s officially fall, but for much of my country, it’s still hot! If your freelance business is based in a home office you may be trying to work in unseasonable heat or humidity. Without air conditioning, slaving away over a hot laptop can be rough. Here are a few home office alternatives to beat the heat:
Libraries
College or university libraries may not be ice-cold but often they have air conditioning. Check first to make sure non-students are allowed in. Local municipal libraries are also a great option, especially if they have free wifi.
Coffee Shops
Your local coffee shop with air conditioning is always an option. It?s great to work near a source of delicious coffee, but the downside is you often have to keep drinking it. Rather ironic if you?re trying to cool off. The upside is that many places have free wifi.
The Laundry Room
Call me crazy, but I have worked downstairs in my building?s laundry room. It?s cool and quiet during the work day because everyone is at work. My wifi network is also accessible. I just roll my freelance office (a chair and a laptop) downstairs and get to work at a folding table.
The Mall
I?ve never tried this, but as the mercury rises, it?s something I?m considering. There is an icy food-court near me. Much more of the weather in my city and I?ll be heading there. Headphones to drown out the sound of screaming children will be a must though.
At a Client?s Office
This could be the last resort of the desperate. I don?t know anyone freelancers working onsite at a client?s office, but this might be an option for some. For tax purposes and good client relations, just be aware of what constitutes freelance vs contracted employee behavior.
Other Alternatives
Freelance work spaces (i.e. co-working) that charge by the hour are one alternative. And of course, giving in and buying an air conditioner is another option, although it?s a pricey one. If you can write off the cost as an expense, it may be worth it.
On the bright side, most of us probably only have a few weeks of hot weather left to contend with. What’s your favorite seasonal place to work?

Kevin Rose: Digg Turned Down $80 Million Acquisition Offer
At TechCrunch's Disrupt conference, Digg's founder Kevin Rose presented a very candid view of the state of Digg during an interview with TechCrunch founder Mike Arrington. Rose admitted that he and the rest of the team made mistakes when they launched Digg v4. He also admitted that Digg's traffic took quite a dip after the launch of v4. Looking back. Rose also pointed out that Digg once got an acquisition offer for close to $80 million. While he was personally willing to take this offer, the Digg board decided to turn it down. Sponsor Digg v4: How Did We Get Here? Asked about the departure of Digg's former CEO Jay Adelson, Rose didn't go into details, but noted that "Jay was ready for something new and so were we." For himself, though, the role of Digg's CEO was not something he "wanted to take on." Rose also noted that he wasn't around at Digg for quite a while before the departure of Adelson. He pointed out that he likes to roll features out, but as the backlog of new features at Digg grew and Digg focused more on revenue producing features than user-facing features, he grew restless. During that time, too, Rose thought that moving engineers to revenue-producing features instead of giving users a new experience was a mistake. Without new features, a lot of Digg's users grew restless and moved on to other services. "Big and Bold and New" Talking about the launch of Digg v4, Rose pointed out that the company had to focus on user-focused features again as development of the site had stagnated for too long. To stand apart from Facebook and Twitter - which Rose admits are taken traffic away from Digg - the company had to do something "big and bold and new." Talking about the mistakes Digg made during the relaunch, Rose admitted that the team made a lot of mistakes. As an example, he noted that the Digg team shouldn't have made the personalized news view the default. Will Kevin Rose Leave Digg Soon? Asked about his own future at Digg, Rose wouldn't go into details, but said that he was getting "burned out" and wouldn't say that he would still be at Digg by the end of the year. Rose is clearly very interested in continuing his work as an angel investor - something he seemed far more passionate about than Digg during today's interview - so we wouldn't be surprised if he left Digg at some point in the near future to pursue this. Freelance Camp and Other Conferences for Freelancers

A few months ago a friend and I jumped on the ferry and took a day trip to beautiful Vancouver, BC, Canada, to experience our first ever Freelance Camp. The event was touted as a chance for freelancers, entrepreneurs, business owners, and anyone interested in learning more about freelancing to discuss ways to start, expand, or improve their business. Turns out there are dozens of these events going on across the world, making for fantastic opportunities for freelancers.
Due to the ferry schedule we missed the beginning of the event. Had we been there, we would have been able to participate in choosing what the day?s discussions would entail. There were four discussions scheduled to take place simultaneously in different rooms, by different presenters. A panel of presenters had to pitch their topic to the morning crowd, and the pitches that received the most votes were the topics for that day. This method ensured that the audience was able to get the most value out of the event. If you wanted more information on a pitch that wasn?t successful, you knew who would be able to help you with that, since they had just pitched it.
What I loved about Freelance Camp:
- Variety of topics to choose from for the day, as there were four presentations going on at any time.
- Quality of the presenters. Each session I went to was led by an expert with real world experience. Since I was still new to freelancing, this was valuable information to me.
- Reminder of just how friendly freelancers are. Polite, engaging, and genuinely interested in what you have to do or say. It was great to find people who understand what freelancing is, and that they have been doing it for years (and in some cases ? decades!).
- Lunch was included!
- Coffee was included!
- The proceeds went to charity.
What I didn?t like about Freelance Camp:
- The topics were outstanding, but sometimes you had to choose between two topics that you were interested in. It would have been nice to have an encore of the popular presentations or a video/podcast of each discussion.
- Pretty hard to complain about an event that is reasonably priced and designed to help you become better in your chosen field. Add in free coffee and lunch – ?nuf said.
There are a variety of Freelance Camps and other freelance conferences coming up, so I’ve shared a selection below. I hope your experience is as positive as mine was.
October 2, 2010 – Freelance Camp Santa Cruz – Santa Cruz, CA, USA
October 3, 2010 – Freelance Camp Toronto – Toronto, ON, Canada
October 9, 2010 – AIW : Going Freelance – Washington, D.C., USA
October 23, 2010 – Freelance Camp De Moines – Des Moines, IA
November 13, 2010 – Indie Conference – Raleigh, NC, USA
Check here to see when future Freelance Camps are coming to a city near you. I will try to be there for the first part of the session ? looking forward to meeting you all!

Digg Has Jumped The Shark
Over time I?ve built something of a reputation as a Digg fan, both within and outside of TNW. I have long enjoyed the community that managed the site and respected the team that built it. That said, I find myself in something of a dull torpor whenever I visit the new Digg; its vitality has been stripped, and its soul seems to have been crushed. The wonky aspects of Digg that long gave it a unique character are being buried in spam and dull stories. Digg has always been broken, but in an odd way it used to work. No, it was not the democratic heaven that some people wanted it to be, but it was a strong content destination. That is no longer the case. Even more, from the publisher perspective, the promise of non-episodic traffic has turned out to be something of a paper dragon. Do we get a few more hits on a day to day basis than we used to? Maybe, but the decline of traffic to Digg?s front page means that the daily crumbs don?t make up the for the massively decreased ?front page? traffic that stories can achieve.

Google Debuts Gallery of Android Phones
One of the constant complaints about the Android diaspora is its fragmentation the increasingly diverse multiplicity of OS versions and devices that are so relevant yet so confusing to the average consumers mobile decision-making process.Apparently, the powers that be (at Google, that is) have heard users complaints on this score and have created the Google Phone Gallery, a carousel of devices that displays images, phone features, manufacturer and carrier information and more. You can sort phones by hardware manufacturer, by phone service provider and even by country, a feature we know our international readers will be very happy about. Finally, you can select multiple devices to do side-by-side comparisons.Theres a tab that reads Phones, too. This seems a bit redundant for a Phone Gallery, unless you consider the rising tide of Android tablets. We hope to see a few non-phone mobile devices featured in this gallery in the very near future. All these devices ship with the standard set of on-deck Android apps you know and love, including the Android Market, Google Search, Maps, Gmail and YouTube. If youre in the market for a new Android or thinking of buying one for the first time, this sites the ideal destination for you. And if youre a contented Android device user, this is where you can point all the people who ask you which phone they should buy next. Now all we need is a better way to sort through the Wild West of apps that is the Android Market Oh, wait. We found that yesterday. If you ask us, the Android platform just gets better all the time. What do you think of the gallery from Google?More About: android, android phones, Google, Hardware, Mobile 2.0, mobile devicesFor more Mobile coverage:Follow Mashable Mobile on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Mobile channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad
